Let’s Streisand Effect this, for real.
The Streisand Effect occurs when censorious thugs, usually using lawyers, try to cover up speech on the Internet by suing the speaker. The resultant publicity brings far more attention to the information than the original post brought by itself. I’d like to encourage my readers to bring the Streisand effect into play here.
About a year ago, a friend emailed me about a Dora the Explorer spoof that’s funny and violent. I finally got around to watching it. Thanks, Kate!
Intrigued by the link at the headline about harassment, I clicked it to find this story:
Over the past week, Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency has been subject to some truly vicious harassment, the kind that only the internet can deliver. Sarkeesian is currently running a Kickstarter project to fund a new video series called Tropes vs. Women in Video Games. The associated YouTube video has been flooded with thousands of hateful comments, a sampling of which can be found on the Feminist Frequency website (warning: graphic language).
This kind of thing makes me absolutely furious, so even though I think videos exposing anti-feminist tropes in video games seems like a rather tired subject, I kicked in 10 bucks just to say FUCK YOU to all the
people morons who think that threatening anyone is ever the right thing to do.
