Voudoun and Cinema
General thesis:
Hollywood has caricatured Voudoun (into VOODOO)
in the American style -- by which most cultural moments and landmarks
are caricatured. While much of this depiction comes from cultural
imperialism and primitivist tendancies and traditions, we should not
overlook the power of metonymy as a cinematic tool in creating these
often-racist depictions of other cultures.
Influences:
- Primitivism: a movement revering the so-called "primitive" connection to nature
- Cultural Imperialism: the colonizing and exploitation of other cultures
- Metonymy: the use of a part of a thing to represent the whole of the thing
