As Turkle's writing points out, the emergence of the digital age has helped us become more comfortable with the notion of 'multiple selves' in our daily lives.
Discussion question 1:
With your group, make a list of the different personas the
people in your group inhabit in their daily lives. One way to think
about these separations might be to look at roles you play--for instance, I'm a
teacher, a husband, a father, a friend, a gamer, and so on. However,
you should keep in mind that not every different role requires a
different persona. For instance, I feel like I have pretty much the
same persona in my roles as husband and as a father. Only include on
your list times that require you to adopt a different persona (or
significantly alter your public face).
Discussion question 2:
Now discuss the kinds of personae you have adopted online. Have
you ever actively experimented with different roles (I know this has
come up a few times before)? Does it change your online experience if
you're being 'yourself' online versus if you're trying out other
roles?
