Game Culture, Spring 2007

Blogging Beats

When reporters cover the same topic regularly, they call that topic their beat. (I they got the term from police officers, who often have an assigned neighborhood, called their beat.) As a group, the Game Culture classes will keep an eye on the happenings in the world of game culture blogs. We will do so by covering blogs and discussing them on our own blog.

Of course, if you make more than one post each week, you may use your extra posts to explore whatever topics interest you.

New assignments:
For one of the three periods below, you will be assigned as a "blogger". The other two periods, you will be a "responder". Your responsibilities for each role are defined below.

Bloggers:
Bloggers are each assigned a "beat" of two or three game blogs. These blogs should inspire most of the posts those bloggers produce about game culture. Each week, you should discuss something mentioned on one of your blogs, write a short bit of commentary (approx 150-200 words) and perhaps include a quote. Blog posts must be posted by midnight Tuesday morning (that's late Monday night).

Responders:
Responders must post two responses to blog posts on the main blog. Your response should be a considered comment, at least 75 words, that engages with an idea in the post or the outside event/blog it refers to. You could also respond to one of the other commenters. While you are not REQUIRED to respond to a very-recent post, you are encouraged to do so.

Adding blogs:
At the beginning of each writing period, we can add or shift blogs around on our list. If you have proposals for blogs that should be moved to 'under watch' or added to our list entirely, let me know. NOTE: suggesting that we add a blog to 'under watch' does not guarantee that you will get to cover that blog.
