Game Culture, Spring 2007

Final Project

The goal of the final project is to demonstrate that you have achieved some or all of the course objectives for Game Culture. To do so, you will produce one of the following:

A Game Design Proclamation
Your game design proclamation should be modeled on the tradition of proclamations--like the Emancipation Proclamation or the Royal Proclamation of 1763--documents that define a new path and shape for an institution. Your proclamation should highlight a problem in the way games are designed. Using ideas drawn from our readings, such as Paida or Ludus play, Narrative vs. Simulation, Telescoping, or issues around virtual communities, you should explain the flaw in the current model of game design, provide examples of that flaw, and then suggest a solution for likeminded designers to pursue. (1000 words)
Two Wikipedia entries
Wikipedia entries for games generally do not include any critical perspectives on those games. Using ideas drawn from our readings, such as Paida or Ludus play, Narrative vs. Simulation, Telescoping, or issues around virtual communities, you should write additions for two Wikipedia articles about games you're familiar with that explain critical perspectives on those games. These entries should be carefully written in appropriate Wikipedia style, and should be added to the pages when your project is complete. Be sure to read Wikipedia's writing guidelines to make sure you fit the conventions of the site. (Alternately, you may add similar entries to the Wiki-Strategy site about these games, but such entries may be more suited to the general Wikipedia.) (2 350-word entries)
Digital presentation - flash or mpeg
Produce an animated, montage, and text-based audio-visual movie explaining a key concept from class. This project could be flash-based or produced in another format, but should include both image and sound, and should be ENTERTAINING and informative. You should use quotes and/or ideas from the source texts as well as including examples and explanations. (approx 3 minutes)
Other demonstration of course objectives
Have your own idea for demonstrating that you've learned the course objectives? Email me by 20 April with a pre-proposal to get the go-ahead!

Example citations
If you're using a citation of an article from a collected book (as many of our class readings were), it should look like this:

Lastnameauthor, Firstname. "Article title in quotes." Book title in italics or underlined. Editor1 and Editor2, eds. City of publication: Publishing house, year.
A video game can be cited in a similar way. A videogame citation should include the game, the publisher, and the year, at a minimum. You could also examine citations for films to see similar kinds of media citations:
Game Title in Italics. Platform. Publisher not in quotes, year.
For further clarification, see the Purdue OWL for a more comprehensive look at MLA formatting.
