Essay 1: Family and Beliefs

The assignment:
For this essay, you are to write a response paper focusing on one of the readings for this week. However, rather than inviting a specifically random conversation, I ask that you concentrate on answering this question: What is a family?

This is a very complex question. If you think there’s an actual definition, then this will be somewhat difficult. If you concentrate on an element of the definition, if you begin with an exploration of what family means to you, then you are better able to define the idea yourself.

Rhetorical considerations:
You should think about how to move from a local to a "global" discussion--from a small issue to a larger one. You should begin with your own personal experience and then move into a more global discussion, one that works from the reading you read. The hope is that you begin to see how you can start an essay with a summary, or a personal story, but that either way you need to build to a larger global discussion. And, that, depending upon how you start—focused in the essay or in your own life—your global assertions can be different.

Again, don’t assume there is any right answer. Think about all the elements of what a family is and then, perhaps, focus on the most important aspect to you.
