The assignment:
This essay focuses on your
experiences of life as they are defined by the community and culture
you live in. Our inspiration for this essay is Zora Neale Hurston's
essay, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me." After you read the essay,
think about the different parts of her community and her
culture that Hurston explores. She explains parts of her own
personality and her lifestyle in conversation with those
experiences. Your goal is to write an essay that explores
experiences you've had that help you define yourself.
Rhetorical considerations:
Notice how Hurston seems to be talking about her personal
experiences, her culture's practices, and definitions all at the
same time. She oscillates (moves back and forth) between these
three topics as she writes. As you write, you should consider the
same strategy--how does your personal experience reflects your
culture's values? How do your culture's values define
roles and relationships? How do roles and relationships in
your community affect how you experience yourself?
Again, don’t assume there is any right answer. Think about all the elements of the project and work through it from there.
