The assignment:
For this paper, you should write an extended response to a post or
series of posts on the class discussion website. Choose a post or
series of posts that activate your interest, then read them
carefully. (If you compose on a computer without internet access, you
may want to print the posts and comments so you can read them
offline.) Write a paper responding to the central question in the
posts. You should explore both sides of the ideas being mentioned and
then add your opinion about the issue.
Rhetorical considerations:
I recommend that you begin your paper with a short summary of what the
discussion has said. If you want to use a couple short direct quotes,
that's okay, but mostly I'd like you to summarize the discussion and
issues at hand. Then your paper should focus on two elements—first,
what cultural elements, ideas, or values are influencing the
participants of the conversation? Second, does your cultural
background align with any of the discussants? Finally, what do you
think about the issue?
